These new guidelines were announced in November 2013 by the National Environment Agency (NEA) after they had revised The Code of Practice on Environmental Health (COPEH) to improve the design and cleanliness of public washrooms in the future.

How Many Toilets Are Needed on a Construction Site?

At a construction site with a workers’ dormitory, for instance, there should be:

  • one toilet
  • one urinal
  • one washbasin and
  • one bathroom with a bench

per 15 or fewer male workers, whereas the same criteria can be applied for every 25 but no more than 500 male workers at construction sites without living quarters/dormitories.

For women working at a construction site with a dormitory, two toilets, one washbasin, and one bathroom with a bench are minimum requirements. The same number of sanitary facilities is to be provided for every 25 of fewer, but no more than 500 female workers at a construction site without living quarters.

How Many Toilets Do Restaurants Need?

The minimum requirement for sanitary facilities in a restaurant, coffee shop, bar, nightclub, discotheque, pub or any other food centre that isn’t bigger than 250 square metres is one toilet and one washbasin to be shared by male and female users.

How Many Toilets Are Required in a Shopping Centre?

Shopping centres or other commercial buildings with shops no larger than 350 square metres should provide the customers with at least one washbasin and one unisex toilet on each floor.

How Many Toilets Are Necessary in a Public Swimming Pool?

Minimum provision of sanitary appliances for public swimming pools up to 250 m2 are two female toilets with one washbasin, and one separate male toilet including one urial and one washbasin.

Further requirements based on the swimming pool size are as in the table below.

In addition, between 2 and 8 benches with hangers, as well as 2 – 6 bathrooms with benches are needed both for men and women separately.
